What is Angioplasty?

Your heart receives oxygen-rich blood from your coronary arteries. Plaque, a sticky substance, accumulates in the coronary arteries of people with coronary artery disease. Calcium, cholesterol, and other chemicals found in your blood blend to form plaque. It can eventually cause your arteries to narrow down or get completely blocked. If this happens, a portion of your heart does not receive enough blood.

By widening the blocked portion of the artery, angioplasty increases blood flow to the oxygen-deficient portion of the heart. In order to clear plaque from the artery walls and allow blood to flow through them, your doctor will use a tiny balloon. To keep the newly created space open, doctors generally insert a stent (a hollow-tube) inside the artery space during the procedure.

Why Do You Need Angioplasty?

  • 01

Atherosclerosis: It is the narrowing or blockage of blood vessels due to accumulation of plaque made of cholesterol.

  • 02

Chest Pain: It may arise due to coronary artery disease or heart attack.

  • 03

Coronary Artery Disease: It happens due to the blockage of blood vessels supplying blood to the heart.

  • 04

Failure of Medical Intervention: Medicines or lifestyle changes failed to improve heart health.

  • 05

Heart Attack: It is done to limit the damage to the heart muscles in case of heart attack.

  • 06

Previous History of CABG: In some CABG patients, angioplasty might be required after some time.

Who is the Right Candidate for Angioplasty?

Depending upon your condition your doctor will take the decision whether to proceed for angioplasty or not. Patients with following conditions are generally considered for the procedure:

  • Atherosclerosis
  • Angina (chest pain related to heart)
  • Coronary artery diseases (CAD)
  • Heart attack due to CAD
  • High-risk individuals or patients having diabetes, hypertension, etc.
  • Failure of medical interventions

How to Prepare for Angioplasty?

Prior to angioplasty, you might need to adjust your medication schedule, activities, and diet. You will undergo certain heart tests and blood tests the days and hours before surgery. Your preparation involves:

  • Step 1:

All previous reports should be brought including blood reports.

  • Step 2:

The patient needs to be admitted on the day of the procedure.

  • Step 3:

Have a light breakfast in the morning before coming to the hospital for the procedure. Fasting is needed before the procedure for a time period recommended by your doctor.

  • Step 4:

All medicines should be taken, except the diabetic medicines which should be withheld on the day of the procedure.

  • Step 5:

Once admitted blood tests are done.

  • Step 6:

Preparation for the procedure is done.

How is Angioplasty Done?

Following steps are involved in the procedure:

  • 01

The majority of angioplasties are performed in hospitals in a specialized space known as a cardiac catheterization lab, or cath lab. You'll be lying down and awake. You will receive intravenous (IV) medication to help you relax.

  • 02

Angioplasty is performed through a specific blood vessel present in your arm, wrist, or groin. Your doctor will create a small opening in one of the selected sites to insert a thin tube (a catheter) into a blood vessel.

  • 03

Using x-ray guide, your doctor will then thread the catheter through the vessel to the heart. A contrast dye will be injected inside your arteries to highlight your heart and blood vessels in the x-rays.

  • 04

The catheter will be replaced with another tube that has a small, deflated balloon on one end.

  • 05

The balloon will be guided inside the blockage and inflated to push the plaque flat against the artery wall, making the artery wider, thereby improving the blood flow.

  • 06

In order to help keep the artery open, a stent (tiny mesh tube) may occasionally be inserted. Certain stents are coated with medication to help stop blood clots from forming.

FAQ'S

Q1: What is the estimated cost of angioplasty?

A: The estimated cost of angioplasty may range from $2500 - $8500.

Q2: What is the typical duration of an angioplasty procedure?

A: Though it can take longer, a coronary angioplasty typically takes 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Q3: Will I need to stay overnight in the hospital for angioplasty?

A: Yes, you might have to stay overnight in the hospital after angioplasty for the observation.

Q4: How long will it take to recover from angioplasty?

A: In most cases, patients will be advised to refrain from intense exercise and heavy lifting for a week or until the wound heals.

Q5: What restrictions will I have during recovery?

A: Make sure you abide by your doctor's instructions regarding the management of specific risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity.

Q6: How likely is it that I will need another angioplasty in the future?

A: Yes, you may or may not require angioplasty in future. It completely depends on how you manage your atherosclerosis by controlling your blood cholesterol levels.

Q7: Is it advisable to seek a second opinion before proceeding?

A: Yes. Getting a second opinion does not imply "distrust" for your doctor. Instead, it gives you complete control over the decisions you make about your course of treatment and ensures that you feel comfortable with every solution.

Q8: How can a caregiver/family member help a patient before, during and after the Procedure?

A: Minimal physical support will be required when the patient is bed-bound. A family member can provide the most needed emotional support during these times.

Q9: What are the advices for patient after this Procedure

A: After the procedure is completed, the catheter is removed. Sometimes, there could be a small amount of bleeding at that site. Your doctor will take care of that. You will be required to stay in bed for a while after the procedure. Most people are required to stay in the hospital for 2 days post Angioplasty. In case of an emergency Angioplasty, you may have to stay in the hospital for longer. When home, check your area of insertion of the catheter (groin or wrist). It is normal to have some bruising. However, if it worsens, or there is redness or swelling, contact your doctor. Before you leave the hospital, you will be told what you can and cannot do when you get home. It is best to avoid heavy physical activities initially. Discuss with your doctor when you can get back to your job and resume strenuous physical activity. Don’t drive for a week after your Angioplasty. In case you have suffered a heart attack, it could take longer to recover.

Q10: Once the Angiography is done will the Angioplasty be done at the same time or not?

A: Whether you require Angioplasty or not depends on the blockages. It also depends on the willingness of the patient. If the patient is willing, then it can be done at the same time, which turns out to be convenient for the patient.
